The word "LASER," as we all know, is an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." It has long ago shed the capital letters normally used for acronyms, and it is now in such common usage that I suspect that in a generation or two, the derivation of the word will disappear from some dictionaries, and the term "laser" will be defined by what it is and does and not where it comes from.
And yes... We are on our way. It gives me immense pleasure to launch the 2nd issue of Journal of Dental Lasers. On behalf of the entire editorial team, I convey my sincere gratitude to all of our authors and reviewers who have submitted papers and/or provided valuable service as a reviewer for JDL from India as well as overseas. Our editorial board and the many ad hoc reviewers have spent countless hours reviewing manuscripts for the Journal over the past year, and we continue to excel as a direct result of your efforts.
During this past year, there have been a number of laser presentations in various parts of the world. While this is not particularly surprising, my perception is that interest in our technology is growing, there are many qualified speakers to deliver that knowledge, and our SOLA academy is helping to lead the educational events. The laser conference in Delhi proved it all. With the participation of all SOLA members, reputed national and international speakers and state-of-the-art trade fair, the conference was a great success.
As always, JDL will continue to fulfill its mission to advance the knowledge and education about the use of lasers in dentistry. Our focus on scientific articles is prominent in this issue. We trust you will find this issue to be intriguing and valuable. Looking forward to achieving our goal in the not-too-distant future, I remain. So, please contact me with your ideas. Our editorial team will spend time and energy to make sure that the overall quality of the JDL will improve in the only acceptable way: through a timely and strict review process, driven by the most competent and meticulous associate editors, and assigned to competent reviewers, whose comments will invaluably help authors to improve their papers.
Let me close by again offering my sincere thanks for everyone's support of the Journal during the past year and by extending my best for your future research endeavors.
Wishing you a happy and prosperous new year 2013!
